Making Tree Preservation a Priority

Go Green Wilmette continues to work on strengthening our local tree ordinance to protect and preserve our existing tree canopy and encourage the planting of more native trees. The Morton Arboretum and the Chicago Region Trees Initiative have consulted with GGW’s tree advocacy team and the Village of Wilmette. The Village of Wilmette’s Land Use Committee has been tasked to review Wilmette’s current tree ordinance. Go Green Wilmette commends and supports the Village staff and the Village board for spending time and putting in effort to do an in-depth study of our current tree ordinance and ways to improve it. A stronger tree ordinance will demonstrate a forward-thinking approach that many other towns are embracing to better equip themselves for climate change. Treating our trees as critical infrastructure will benefit our community now and for many years to come. The Land Use Committee is going to have several meetings where the Village staff will inform the committee about Wilmette’s tree ordinance and options to strengthen it. The committee meetings are listed on the Village website. Please make an effort to attend the meetings and make your voice heard for a stronger tree ordinance. Meetings are open to the public.

You can view the GGW webinar on the value of treating trees as critical infrastructure by Lydia Scott, Director of the Chicago Region Trees Initiative here.
