SUMMARY:Go Green Reads: Beyond Words
DESCRIPTION:In Beyond Words by Carl Safina\, readers travel to Kenya and witness struggling elephant families work out how to survive poaching and drought\, to Yellowstone National Park to observe wolves deal with the aftermath of one pack’s personal tragedy\, and finally plunge into the astonishingly peaceful society of killer whales living in the crystalline waters of the Pacific Northwest. \nBeyond Words brings forth powerful and illuminating insight into the unique personalities of animals through extraordinary stories of animal joy\, grief\, jealousy\, anger\, and love. The similarity between human and nonhuman consciousness\, self-awareness\, and empathy calls us to re-evaluate how we interact with animals. Wise\, passionate\, and eye-opening at every turn\, Beyond Words is ultimately a graceful examination of humanity’s place in the world. \nGo Green Reads is offered through a collaboration between Go Green Winnetka and Go Green Wilmette in partnership with The Book Stall and the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District. \nPlease register HERE and email gogreenreads@gmail.com with questions.

SUMMARY:Go Green Reads: Abundance
DESCRIPTION:Join this virtual book group whether you’ve read the book or not. This book seeks to create a new political lens through which to view the world that is grounded in abundance instead of scarcity and an optimistic vision for the future. \nKlein & Thompson explore the possibility for US economic growth and technological development by shifting the focus of American politics from scarcity to abundance. They encourage Americans to look to the possibility of a brighter future through reimagining and restructuring current US systems\, which tend to create manufactured scarcities. \nGo Green Reads is offered through a collaboration between Go Green Winnetka and Go Green Wilmette in partnership with The Book Stall and the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Crane Migrations: Securing critical stopovers across political borders
DESCRIPTION:Since times untold the departures and arrivals of cranes in autumn and spring have heralded the changes of seasons. During these journeys across continents\, cranes stop at traditional sites\, known as staging areas\, to rest and build up fat reserves for the next flight. In central Asia\, cranes migrate at astounding altitudes over the Himalayas. Festivals and crop planting in some cultures are associated with the migration of cranes. In recent years\, extensive new information about the migration of cranes has been secured using telemetry devices attached to cranes that communicate with satellites and cell phone towers. Dr. George Archibald\, Co-Founder and Senior Conservationist of the International Crane Foundation\, will summarize what is known about the migrations of cranes across Asia and North America and how ICF works to secure these stopovers. \nSPEAKER: Dr. George Archibald\, International Crane Foundation\, Co-Founder & Senior Conservationist \nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:Herbicide Drift: Are Trees Impacted Here?
DESCRIPTION:Herbicide Drift. Are trees impacted here? How to recognize it? What’s being done?\nSpeaker: Kim Erndt-Pitcher\, Prairie Rivers Network Director of Ecological Health\nRegister for Zoom HERE \nHerbicide drift (trespass) has been an economic and ecological concern for decades. However in recent years\, there have been dramatic increases in the use of many popular herbicides in an effort to combat herbicide-resistant weeds. Widespread injuries to wild and cultivated plants have been reported since these increases in herbicide use began. Prairie Rivers Network’s Tree and Plant Health Monitoring Program has studied the impacts of drift for 7 years. This presentation will discuss the summary of 6 years of findings\, such as the long term impacts of herbicide drift to trees\, plants\, and ecosystem health in our new report “Hidden in Plain Sight”.

SUMMARY:The Dark Side of Outdoor Light: Light Pollution and Its Effects on the Environment and Human Health
DESCRIPTION:Join Climate Action Evanston for this virtual program \nLearn about the harmful effects of light pollution on wildlife and human health\, and what you and your local government can do to reduce the impacts. \nLife on Earth evolved in conditions subject to only natural sources of light and is adapted to these natural lighting sources and cycles. Many plants and animals depend on natural cycles of light and darkness for optimal health and even survival. Evidence is mounting that artificial light at night (ALAN) affects the behavior\, health\, and abundance of various living creatures\, thereby disrupting natural ecological processes. This presentation discusses how unwanted ALAN—light pollution—harms wildlife and affects human health and well-being. Best management practices for reducing negative impacts of ALAN are also presented. \nSpeaker: Robert Sullivan\nRetired\, Argonne National Laboratory \nhttps://www.climateactionevanston.org/natural-habitat/nurturingnature

SUMMARY:Climate and Sustainability: the Challenge for Mosquito-Disease Control
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is widely expected to increase the range and distribution of mosquito and tick vectors of disease as well as the viruses they carry with serious implications for the future of public health. Against this backdrop\, the catalogue of materials capable of controlling mosquitoes is rapidly dwindling due to overuse\, resistance\, and regulatory pressure. The demand for ecological sustainability\, the protection of endangered species\, and conservation adds another layer of complexity to the challenge of protecting the public health from a rising tide of threats. The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District in Northfield\, Illinois has been adapting the last 8 years to meet the present and future needs of our residents. By merging GIS digital technologies with mosquito-specific larval control\, investing in key research\, and collaborating with scientists in the Midwest region the NSMAD has created an effective\, sustainable\, and ecologically sound model for mosquito control that can meet the demands of the future. \nREGISTER for Zoom or In Person \n

SUMMARY:Go Green Reads: Kingbird Highway
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this discussion of Kingbird Highway whether you have a chance to read the book or not. Suitable for all ages. \nAt sixteen\, Kenn Kaufman dropped out of the high school where he was student council president and hit the road\, hitch hiking back and forth across the United States\, from Alaska to Florida\, Maine to Mexico. Maybe not all that unusual a thing to do in the seventies\, but what Kenn was searching for was a little different: not sex\, drugs\, God\, or even self\, but birds. A report of a rare bird would send him hitching nonstop from Pacific to Atlantic and back again. When he was broke he would pick fruit or do odd jobs to earn the fifty dollars or so that would last him for weeks. \nHis initial goal was to set a record – most North American species seen in a year – but along the way he began to realize that at this breakneck pace he was only looking\, not seeing. What had been a game became a quest for a deeper understanding of the natural world. Kingbird Highway is a unique coming-of-age story\, combining a lyrical celebration of nature with wild\, and sometimes dangerous\, adventures\, and starring a colorful cast of characters\, literally and figuratively. \nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:Bird Collisions: Hazardous Features and Easy Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Annette Prince Director\, Chicago Bird Collision Monitors Nearly a billion birds perish each year as a result of window strikes. They see the sky or tree in a window reflection and fly towards it\, dying at the solid pane. For decades\, Annette Prince of the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors has collected about 11\,000 birds a year\, helping the Field Museum build an extraordinary profile of bird collisions in our area\, and saving thousands of injured songbirds. She will discuss the perils facing our migratory birds\, the buildings where they collide in Chicago and Evanston and why. She shares easy steps we can each take to help them find safe passage through Chicagoland. It’s a concern only heightened in recent years as our population of birds declines while our reliance on glass grows as a foundation element in architectural design. \nREGISTER FOR ZOOM OR IN PERSON
