SUMMARY:Doug Tallamy on the Homegrown National Park Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Doug Tallamy returns to the Glencoe Library to share details about his newest initiative\, Homegrown National Park. The author of Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants and other acclaimed books on environment\, Tallamy is calling on public and private spaces to offset the rapidly rising impacts of climate change by supporting and expanding biodiversity. Homegrown National Park challenges private property owners–who control 83% of U.S. land–to select ecologically effective plants\, shrink the size of their lawns\, and remove invasives to restore critical diversity. “In the past\, we have asked one thing of our gardens: that they be pretty\,” says Tallamy. “Now they have to support life\, sequester carbon\, feed pollinators\, and manage water.” \nPresented in partnership with the Friends of the Green Bay Trail and the Glencoe Sustainability Task Force. \nREGISTER HERE for this Zoom program. A recording of the program will be available on the library’s YouTube channel a few days after the event.

SUMMARY:Monarchs in a Changing World
DESCRIPTION:The bright colors and extraordinary migration habits of monarch butterflies have made them one of our most beloved insects. Their populations have fallen drastically in recent decades. In July 2022 they were classified as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature\, the world’s most comprehensive scientific authority on the status of species. \nLearn about monarch migration\, their overwintering biology\, and the critical need for their global conservation from Karen Oberhauser\, a conservation biologist at the University of Wisconsin who has studied monarchs for over 35 years. \nProgram is cosponsored by  the Friends of the Green Bay Trail and the Glencoe Public Library \nRegister  for this FREE ZOOM presentation at: glencoelibrary.org

SUMMARY:Suzanne Simard on the Social Life of Trees
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating presentation on the interrelationships between trees with Dr. Suzanne Simard. \nIn her book\, Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest\, Dr. Simard’s research  reveals trees are more than timber or pulp  resources. Trees are interconnected via complex fungi connections that serve as social networks. They  communicate vulnerabilities\, learn\, adapt behaviors\, recognize neighboring trees\, and  contribute to forest resiliency.  It is through these underground networks that Mother Trees connect and sustain the forest community. \nDr. Simard is a professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia and a pioneer of plant communication and intelligence. Her work has influenced filmmakers (the Tree of Souls in James Cameron’s Avatar). and her TED talks have been viewed by more than 10 million people worldwide. The paperback edition of her book will be released on June 21st. \nMatt Evans\, Managing Ecologist for Chicago Botanic Garden’s woodlands\, will be the evening’s moderator. \nRegistration required: at    https://bit.ly/3PvyxUI or online at the Glencoe Public Library \n
