Plan a low-waste Thanksgiving
If you’re hosting a dinner this Thanksgiving, start planning now to reduce the waste often generated by holiday meals. You’ll probably save money along the way! Plan to use your china, glassware, flatware and cloth napkins instead of paper or plastic tableware. Composting food scraps as you cook will also reduce the amount you send to the landfill.
When thinking about how much food to serve, remember that people are unlikely to take full servings of something when many dishes are on offer. Several websites exist to help you estimate the amount of food you need for the guests you are hosting, including the NRDC’s Guestimator tool and a food portion calculator from Love Food Hate Waste. These websites also offer tips for storing any leftovers so that they don’t go bad before you can use them. Enjoy a low waste meal this year, and do your part for the planet.
