SUMMARY:Crane Migrations: Securing critical stopovers across political borders
DESCRIPTION:Since times untold the departures and arrivals of cranes in autumn and spring have heralded the changes of seasons. During these journeys across continents\, cranes stop at traditional sites\, known as staging areas\, to rest and build up fat reserves for the next flight. In central Asia\, cranes migrate at astounding altitudes over the Himalayas. Festivals and crop planting in some cultures are associated with the migration of cranes. In recent years\, extensive new information about the migration of cranes has been secured using telemetry devices attached to cranes that communicate with satellites and cell phone towers. Dr. George Archibald\, Co-Founder and Senior Conservationist of the International Crane Foundation\, will summarize what is known about the migrations of cranes across Asia and North America and how ICF works to secure these stopovers. \nSPEAKER: Dr. George Archibald\, International Crane Foundation\, Co-Founder & Senior Conservationist \nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:Fixing Climate Change in Your Backyard (and Front Yard)
DESCRIPTION:A lot of us are pretty unhappy about the direction in which our planet’s environment is headed. Unfortunately\, many people also think there’s nothing we can do about it. That’s not exactly true. The decisions we make in our yards and our homes—especially if done en masse—can make a huge difference in saving plant and animal species and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. \nSPEAKER: Mike Nowak\, Award-winning journalist and radio broadcaster \nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:Go Green Reads: Shelter and Storm: At Home in the Driftless
DESCRIPTION:Join Go Green Reads for a special in-person gathering with Tamara Dean\, author of Shelter and Storm: At Home in the Driftless\, which tells the soul-stirring and practical account of living mindfully with nature during times of uncertainty. Dean’s quest to live lightly on the planet drew her to a landscape unlike any other: the Driftless area of Wisconsin\, where she confronted\, in ways large and small\, the challenges of meeting basic needs while facing the ravages of climate change. \nUntouched during the last ice age\, the Driftless area lacks the characteristic glacial deposits known as drift; its steep hills\, forested ridges\, deeply carved river valleys\, and cold-water trout streams are more closely related to those of the Great Lakes region than those of the broader Midwest and central Plains regions. Dean will share her boundless curiosity\, gift for storytelling\, and sense of adventure in conversation with The Book Stall’s beloved bookseller and book group leader Jon Grand. \nGo Green Reads is offered through a collaboration between Go Green Winnetka and Go Green Wilmette in partnership with The Book Stall and the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District. \nRegistration is not required for this event\, which will be in person and at an earlier starting time than usual.
