Go Green Wilmette (GGW) is partnering with the Village of Wilmette to host a white Styrofoam recycling collection. This is an opportunity to recycle block white polystyrene/Styrofoam (PS 6), which cannot be recycled through the Village of Wilmette’s residential Refuse and Recycling Program.
- Only White Styrofoam in blocks and sheets will be accepted.
- NO Styrofoam “peanuts.”
- NO Styrofoam food containers, trays, or cups.
- Remove Styrofoam from bags or boxes and take bags & boxes with you.
Residents can drop off their Styrofoam during hours listed below:
- 1315 Central Ave. (9 a.m. – 5 p.m., M – Sunday) Large boxes outside on front porch
- Public Works Facility, 711 Laramie Ave. (DROP OFF HERE CANCELED DUE TO COVID SURGE)
GGW will bring the Styrofoam to the Abt Electronics Recycling Center (Glenview, IL). Abt has a machine that processes the Styrofoam, and the resultant dense Styrene is sold to businesses that that make plastic products. Recycling Styrofoam reduces the amount of Styrofoam that washes into our lakes and streams where it leaches toxins and is mistaken for food by fish, birds, and small wildlife.
GGW would like to thank UMF Corporation, which has made this collection possible for several years with the generous loan of a cargo van to transport very large boxes filled with Styrofoam to the Abt Recycling Center.
