Are you living in an apartment or condo building in Wilmette? Go Green Wilmette partners with residents and management of multi-unit buildings to discuss the ways in which your building can go green. The focus of these conversations includes topics such as electric vehicle charging, food scrap composting, energy efficiency, community solar, dark sky lighting, native gardens and more. Go Green Wilmette can also put you in contact with industry experts to have in-depth conversations about how they can help you incorporate sustainable elements into your building and your lifestyle. In addition to one-on-one meetings, we are willing to meet with groups of interested individuals.
On June 28, 2023 Go Green Wilmette hosted a “Green Tea” co-hosted by the green team at 1440 Sheridan Road. Residents and managers of several different multi-unit buildings came together to listen and share. Guest speaker Tim Milburn, an expert in EV charging solutions, discussed ways to install EV chargers in parking lots of multi-unit residences and talked about problem solving for some of the most common challenges encountered in adopting it. Erlene Howard, of Collective Resource Compost, shared ways to incorporate food scrap composting into apartments and condos. Go Green Wilmette president, Beth Drucker, highlighted the benefits of signing up for community solar and emphasized the need for dark sky lighting and native landscaping. Finally, Junia Hedberg led an open forum, with residents from various buildings sharing the ways their buildings have made a switch to greener alternatives and discussed challenges they encountered in this process. This gave residents the opportunity to support one another with solutions.
Some buildings have completed a free Com-Ed energy audit which includes improvements such as switching light bulbs to LEDs and substituting shower heads for low-flow alternatives. Others have established food scrap composting for the entirety of their building. A few have newsletters, delivered by email or on paper to residents highlighting green solutions and local environmental issues, while others have removed all nonnative plants from their landscaping.
Go Green Wilmette has prepared some guidelines and materials to get you started. You can access those materials HERE.
Go Green Wilmette is eager to speak with you or your management company/HOA regarding these green initiatives. We plan to host another “Green Tea” in the early fall, date to be determined.
